Avery Haydock Fulford 🦠🌋

Hello! I'm a deep-sea microbiology PhD Candidate in the MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography, working with Dr. Julie Huber. I am an NSF Graduate Research Fellow (GRFP).

Before starting grad school, I worked with Dr. Heather Graham at NASA Goddard and in Dr. Amy Schmid's halophilic archaea lab as an undergraduate at Duke University.

My research interests include deep-sea microbial ecology, astrobiology, the search for life on ocean worlds of our solar system, chemolithoautotrophy, hydrothermal vent biogeochemistry, integrated multi-'omic bioinformatics, and microbial adaptations to extremes.

Watch my feature in an interview while aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute's R/V Falkor (too) with ROV SuBastian, studying "The Underworld of Hydrothermal Vents":
